Windows Server 2003 end of life (EOL)

On July 14, 2015 Windows Server 2003 is End of Life. That means that as of July 14, 2015 Microsoft stops issuing security patches for Windows Server 2003 leaving the operating system open to viruses and hackers that exploit vulnerabilities.

In an effort to keep data secure it is recommended that everyone stops using Windows Server 2003 before July 14, 2015. Majority of Windows 2003 servers are running on aging hardware which is why it is a good time to not only update the operating system but also upgrade the hardware. By upgrading both the hardware and operating system you will receive a boost in performance and added functionality from the new OS.

Firstly you will need to ensure that your software is compatible with the new operating system you are migrating to. Currently Windows Server 2012 R2 is the latest and greatest from Microsoft however there are other options: Windows Server 2008, 2008 R2 or 2012 if your applications are not compatible with Windows Server 2012 R2. Windows Server 2008 is End of Life in January 2020.

Start planning the migration of your data, services and applications to a new server now. Dont wait until July 14, 2015 to start thinking about retiring your Windows Server 2003, planning is essential and you should aim to have everything migrated before the deadline of July 14, 2015. If everything goes to plan your data, services and applications can be running on a new server without the worry of your data being insecure due to unpatched vulnerabilities.
